Tuskegee netters head to Mobile for SIAC roundup

MOBILE, Ala. (goldentigersports.com) — With just over two weeks to play before the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Championships, the Tuskegee University tennis programs head south to face other conference teams in the second SIAC Roundup this season hosted by Spring Hill College.

The Tuskegee men (3-8, 3-5 SIAC) will play seven matches in three days beginning Thursday morning as they attempt to make the field for the conference championship. The Golden Tigers will face Lane College, a team they defeated in the first roundup 7-2, before facing the host Badgers of Spring Hill at 12:30 Thursday. They will close out the first day of competition against LeMoyne-Owen, a team in which they defeated 7-0 in their first meeting, at 6 pm.

The Golden Tigers return to the court on Friday morning at 8 am against Stillman College, before facing LeMoyne-Owen again on Friday at 12:30 pm and closing out the second day against Fort Valley State whom they defeated 5-2 earlier in the season.

The men will close out the SIAC Roundup against Benedict Saturday morning.

Reggie Richardson leads Tuskegee in singles play, recording an overall record of 4-3 including a 4-1 record at number four singles. The reigning SIAC Player of the Year, Oshane Trail has recorded a 3-3 overall record including 3-1 at number on singles.

In doubles play, the teams of Trail and Richardson (number one), and teammates Brandon Sewell and Michael Graham (number two) have recorded identical 2-1 records.

On the women’s side, Tuskegee (7-3, 6-1 SIAC) will look to improve on their conference mark when they play the identical schedule as the men will play with the exception of two extra matches on Saturday. In the first roundup this season, the women finished 4-1 with their only loss to Benedict.

The women will face Albany State for the first time this season, playing Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm and again on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. They will also play Clark Atlanta for the first time, facing the Lady Panthers at 12:30 pmon Saturday.

Navilla Paul leads Tuskegee, posting a perfect record through 10 matches as she has posted a 5-0 overall record, including winning all three of her matches at number five singles.

Monica Thomas has posted a 5-3 overall record, including a 4-1 record at number two singles. Meanwhile, reigning SIAC Freshman and Player of the Year Reicia North has recorded a 4-4 record overall in singles play, including 3-3 at number one singles.

The team of North and Thomas have posted a 6-3 record at number one doubles this season, while the team of Kayla Triche and Taylor Wilson have posted a record of 5-3 (including 4-3 at number three).
