It was a moving ceremony and special tributes as family, friends and the law enforcement community gathered to honor the man they all knew and loved.

“He was somebody I really looked up to. He was kind of a like an older brother even though he was only 8 months older than me,” said Marshall’s cousin Regis Nicoll.

There were plenty of tears.

“I’ve been with him 16 years as chief. It’s going to be hard. I know grown man ain’t supposed to cry, but man, I’m can’t get over him,” said Sheriff Derrick Cunningham.

There was also laughter and tales of fishing trips.

Those who worked with D.T. Marshall say they will not forget his work ethic and devotion he had to his job.

“Back in the days when I knew him at the police department, nobody would go home until that case was solved. He cared about the community. He cared about every case, but he cared about every victim. He knew that there were victims behind those crimes and he showed that empathy to those victims,” said District Attorney Daryl Bailey.
