ASU softball’s Centeno named Madness SWAC Player of the Week

CULVER CITY, CA (bamastatesports.com) — Junior Valerie Centeno has been named the College Sports Madness Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Week.
The outfielder from Ventura, Calif. and reigning SWAC hit queen has really turned it lately, increasing her batting average by nearly 100 points over the past month.

Backed by a current seven-game hitting streak, Centeno has raised her batting average from .195 on Feb. 27 to .282 on March 26.

During the past week, Centeno batted 5-for-11 (.455) with her first two home runs of the season to go along with seven RBI, five runs scored and also stole two bases without committing an error in the outfield.

“She was struggling at first and it was not due to anything physical,” said ASU head coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson.

“With everything that she accomplished last season, I think she was pressing too hard. We all go through a rough patch. We’re all really proud of her for working hard and getting back to the Val that we all know her to be.”

This was the first weekly award for Centeno since last March 17, 2015.
