Aaron SmithWe have an update in the case of Montgomery Police Officer Aaron Smith who’s charged with the murder of Gregory Gunn.

The city says he’s still technically a city employee. Even though he doesn’t have to report to work day-to-day, Officer Aaron Smith is still being paid and still has his benefits.

Reporter Sarah Canty reached out to Montgomery city leaders this morning to find out his employment status. She was told that termination proceedings are ongoing but under due-process, the city must present the underlying facts in the matter. They say the case is still under review by the state bureau of investigation and until that is complete, city leaders say Smith can legally keep his job.

There have been two other unrelated cases where MPD officers were arrested and charged with crimes. City leaders say the same process is followed regardless of the different infraction or allegation.

The officer charged with sodomy is also on administrative leave, pending termination proceedings. The other officer charged with leaving the scene of an accident, resigned.

Montgomery city leaders say their investigation into policies and procedures surrounding the shooting death of Gregg Gunn is ongoing.

Continue to check back for the latest updates in this case.
