OFFICERMONTHCrimestoppers is teaming up with Alabama News Network exclusively to award the “Officer of the Month.”

This month’s recipient says a career in law enforcement chose him and it’s been a passion for almost 35 years.
Today the Fraternal Order of Police Capitol City Lodge 11 and Central Alabama Crimestoppers stopped by roll call at Alabama State University to award Captain Tony Simmons as Officer of the Month.  He’s been with the department for six years. His superiors nominated him for the award, saying he goes above and beyond what’s expected.  He started an emergency management program to help in times of natural disasters or emergencies. He also was instrumental in getting the emergency notification system up and running.
Capt. Tony Simmons, Alabama State University Police said, “It’s on behalf of each one of those officers back there that put on the boot straps and are on the front lines. Being able to accept that on their behalf because I know without them we are not going to be able to get anything accomplished and it’s just reward for me to be able to accept it on their behalf.”

Jim Grayboys, Chief ASU Police said, “He goes beyond. It’s not just him coming in everyday, driving around in a car. he’s coming in everyday caring for the needs of his police officers yet on top of that he’s doing things like creating a management system, creating a senior staff system that helps with the officers in their management. And helps them in their response times on calls and he’s gone on going beyond the day to day operations.”

Congratulations to Captain Simmons. We profile an officer each month right here on CBS 8 and ABC Montgomery.
