Graduates of W.B. Doby High School in Wetumpka are planning a special ceremony to remember their school. Doby High School was an all-black high school that existed during the time that Alabama schools were segregated.

Doby High School existed from 1963-1970. The school was built because the then-current Elmore County Training School was getting outdated and black students were not allowed to attend the all-white Wetumpka High School.

Now, a group of Doby graduates is working to make sure their school will never be forgotten. What had been Doby High School is today Wetumpka Elementary School. On April 23, a group of graduates will gather to unveil a historical marker at the school property.

The ceremony is scheduled to include music and words from church pastors and Elmore Co. School Superintendent Andre Harrison.

The Alabama Historical Commission has listed the school in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. It’s a listing of historic, architectural and archaeological landmarks.
