AUM bests Thomas 6-1 in Hits for Heroes Game
OZARK, Ala. (aumathletics.com) — The No. 6 Auburn Montgomery baseball team defeated Thomas University 6-1 Wednesday afternoon in the Hits for Heroes Game, after scattering 10 hits as a team.
NOTES
• The Warhawks improved to 30-9 on the year.
• The Night Hawks fell to 13-24 on the season.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior Houston Davenport led the way for the Warhawks with a 3-for-4 showing and an RBI.
• Senior Mac Seibert finished just behind him with two hits in the game, while adding a walk and a run scored.
• Senior Brandon Pooler added a game-high two RBIs on a 1-for-3 performance, and picked up a walk.
• Senior Cody Rush, junior Trey Matherson and sophomore Scotty Smith all added an RBI for the Warhawks in the game as well.
• Sophomore Seth Arroyo picked up on the win on the mound to improve to 2-2 in his sixth starting nod of the season. He tossed five innings complete giving up just one earned run on five hits, and picking up one strike out in the appearance.
• The senior trio of Brady Eldridge, Clark Gray and David Carter each made an appearance as well as the crew did not allow a run to score. Eldridge picked up four strikeouts on one hit in his two innings of work, while Gray and Carter each added an inning of scoreless relief. Carter struck out all three batters he faced in the inning.
• Jeremy Crosby led the way for Thomas as he finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM had a chance to score in the bottom of the first inning after two singles to start the game from Pooler and Cosby, but the Warhawks were unable to plate a run.
• AUM scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a ground ball to the right side from Pooler that scored Pruitt to give the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead.
• AUM continued the pressure in the bottom of the third, adding four additional runs. Rush, Smith and Pooler were walked with bases loaded to provide three of the runs, and Davenport singled to center for an RBI, which gave AUM the 4-0 advantage after three innings.
• Thomas notched its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on four hits. Crosby singled to right to score Cruess, to cut the lead the three, 4-1.
• AUM added to the lead two innings later in the bottom of the seventh, as Matherson singled through the right side to score Pruitt, which gave the Warhawks a 5-1 advantage with three frames to play.
• After a scoreless bottom of the eighth, Carter shut the door for the Warhawks by striking out the side in the top of the ninth, to give AUM the 6-1 neutral site victory over Thomas.
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Friday, April 8, when they host William Carey University in a Southern States Athletic Conference contest that is set to begin at 6 p.m.
