Midwives are women who help a mother who chooses to give birth at home. Some lawmakers are proposing a bill that would legalize midwifery in the state. It’s been an ongoing issue for mothers for decades.
It was a packed room inside the House Health Committee Hearing for the Child Birth Safety Act. The proposed bill would allow midwives with the necessary training to help mothers give birth in the state. Under the current law, it’s legal for a mother to give birth at home, but if a midwife is even present in the home they could face prosecution, and even jail time.
People who are for the bill say it’s important for mothers who live in rural areas to have access to certified midwives, while some doctors and nurses disagree. The bill will head to another committee, and some lawmakers hope to have the bill up for a vote by the end of the session.
