Generals blank Biscuits in 2016 SL season opener
JACKSON, TN (biscuitsbaseball.com) – Jake Faria (0-1) matched Edwin Diaz (1-0) nearly every step of the way, but it was the Jackson Generals’ (1-0) right-hander who came out on top, downing the Biscuits 6-0 on Opening Day.
Faria, who led all of Minor League baseball in wins last season with 17, allowed a hit on the first pitch of the game to Guillermo Heredia before retiring the next 15 batters he faced. The right-hander struck out eight on the night, but eventually ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth when he allowed a two-out RBI-infield single to D.J. Peterson.
The 22-year-old was then removed for Jeff Ames, and the right-handed reliever served up a two-run triple to Jackson right fielder Tyler O’Neill to make it 3-0 Jackson. Faria finished with a line of 5.2 IP, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk. The Generals never looked back.
On the other side, Diaz was outstanding, keeping Montgomery off balance all night. At one point the 22-year-old struck out six consecutive Biscuits, and eight of nine, en route to the victory. He finished the evening going six innings, allowing no runs on just two hits with nine strikeouts.
The Biscuits mustered just four hits, but Johnny Field collected two of them from the clean up spot on a cold, windy night in western Tennessee. Montgomery will look to even the series against Jackson on Friday night when they send Taylor Guerrieri to the mound against Ryan Yarbrough at 7:05 PM.
The Biscuits will open up at home on Tuesday night, April 12 against the Mississippi Braves on Free Hot Dog Night.
