Injuries force Faulkner to punt spring football scrimmage
MONTGOMERY, Ala (AlabamaNews.Net) — Faulkner University’s head football coach Charlie Boren is calling off the dogs when it comes to the Eagles’ spring football regimen, as the team’s regularly scheduled spring scrimmage for Thursday evening, has now been canceled due to mounting injuries.
Faulkner still plans to hold a light, non-contact practice instead of the scrimmage, but little else, citing an “unbelievable” amount of injuries to the current roster.
“From a coaching standpoint, we will continue to install and take a look at potential packages that we may use this fall,” Boren said. “Spring is always a good time to evaluate concepts and personnel packages and we will continue to do that this week. We have scaled back our live due to the injuries and smaller-than-normal spring numbers. I don’t necessarily see this as a negative, but rather an opportunity to work on an expanded packages on our special teams, which we are overhauling.
“Despite not having a game, we’d still love to have people come out and watch us Thursday night.”
Faulkner opens its season Thursday night, Sept. 1, at 6 against Southeastern (Fla.).
“We’re excited about opening our season on a Thursday night,” Boren said. “We think we can get a lot of people from our community to come out and watch us that ordinarily might not be able to on a Saturday. We know our students and fans are looking forward to it.”
The final practice of the spring is Thursday night at 6:30 at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium, and is open to the public.
