Arica Watkins-Smith got 58.4 percent over Collins’ 41.5 percent.
Collins was appointed to the board to fill Beverly Ross’ seat after she passed away last year.
Watkins-Smith says her motto is “leadership focused on students.” She says if she is on the board, that’s what she plans to be about.
“It’s going to be to help strengthen the curriculum. Make sure we are being transparent. Make sure that we are being very innovative and allowing our students to be the creative beings that they are. Make sure our teachers’ voices are heard, and they are given the autonomy that they need to teach, and make sure the principals are given the authority. And I know that I am going to work with a fantastic board,” said Watkins-Smith.
Watkins-Smith will now go on to face the Republican challenger in the November election.
