AUM upsets Georgia Gwinnett 2-1
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (aumathletics.com) —- Six Auburn Montgomery pitchers combined to limit top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett to just five hits, as the No. 8 Warhawks upset the Grizzlies 2-1 Wednesday at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
NOTES
• The Warhawks improved to 32-11 on the season.
• The Grizzlies fell to 42-4 on the year.
• AUM’s last victory over the nation’s top team came last year on April 24, when it defeated then-No. 1 Faulkner, 6-3.
• The contest was the first meeting between the two teams.
• Georgia Gwinnett entered the contest hitting .343 as a team.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Kaleb Harris was the lone Warhawk to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.
• Deric Boone also reached base twice, picking up a single and collecting a walk.
• Mac Seibert picked up his second triple of the year and scored a run.
• Dalton Kelley and Cody Rush drove in runs for the Warhawks.
• Seth Arroyo improved to 3-2 on the year by tossing 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Arroyo struck out two and walked one, while allowing four hits.
• AUM starter Chance Calloway allowed just one hit in his two innings of work.
• Richard Nason, James Dean, Clark Gray and Jed Carter combined to throw 3 2/3 innings of no-hit relief following Arroyo. Carter picked up his 13th save of the year in the process.
• William Paschal reached base three times, collecting a pair of hits and a walk.
• Adam Clark scattered seven hits in six innings of work, falling to 4-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Warhawks plated a run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Kelley. Brandon Pooler led off the game by reaching on a throwing error by Paschal and moved to third on a single by Houston Davenport. Kelley followed by lifting a fly ball to left field, allowing Pooler to race home and gave AUM a 1-0 lead.
• AUM upped its lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning, when a single by Rush plated Seibert. With one out, Seibert roped a ball into the right field corner and hustled in for a triple. Following a strikeout and a walk to Boone, Rush dropped a single to shallow left field, allowing Seibert to score.
• The Grizzlies plated their lone run of the game in the seventh inning without recording a hit. Trumon Jefferson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Trey Haygood. Jefferson moved to third on a groundout by Marcus McCorkle, before scoring on a wild pitch by Dean. However, with Josh Merrigan standing on third base with two outs, Dean ended the threat by forcing Zac Rinehart to fly out to left field.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM turned two double plays in the game, while Georgia Gwinnett rolled one.
• Each team stranded their share of runners on base. The Warhawks left nine and the Grizzlies stranded 10.
• The Grizzlies committed the only two errors of the game. AUM played its first error-free game since game two of its doubleheader at Middle Georgia on March 26.

• The Warhawks will return to Southern States Athletic Conference play on Friday, April 15, when they travel to Pulaski, Tenn., to open a three-game series against Martin Methodist. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
