Tuskegee preps for SIAC’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships
ROCK HILL, S.C. (goldentigersports.com) – The Tuskegee University track and field programs will begin competition at the SIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Winthrop University Thursday morning.
The meet will start with the multi-event athletes in the Heptathlon (women) and Decathlon (men). The Golden Tigers will send senior Greg Coleman as their entrant into the Decathlon, looking to repeat as the SIAC champion. The senior has not competed in the event this season, but has competed in several events that make up the Decathlon to prepare for the championships.
Several other events will take place in field events on Thursday, including the long jump and shot put with freshman Vincent Williams challenging for a place on the medal stand. The freshman has won four events this season, including setting a meet record in the event at the Vulcan Ice Breaker Duals. He will be in Flight 3, and has recorded the fifth longest throw of the season thus far.
On the women’s side of competition on Thursday, Destiny McLendon will challenge for the medal stand in the long jump. So far this season, she has recorded the third best jump in the conference at 5.32 meters.
The track events heat up on Thursday with the women’s 400m hurdles. Ariel Truitt will challenge for points for Tuskegee, and will compete in the second heat in the third lane with a time of 1:12.50. On the men’s side in the 400m hurdles, Darvelle Smith will compete in the second heat and be in lane seven with a time of 1:01.19 this season. In the men’s 800m, Frederick Higgins will challenge for points for the Golden Tigers with the ninth-fastest time of the season in the conference at 1:59.20 as the prelims get underway.
The event will continue through the day on Thursday and through Saturday.
