The former head of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Spencer Collier is disputing claims that he approved the decision to use a state aircraft to take Governor Bentley’s wallet to him in 2014.

Current ALEA Secretary Stan Stabler confirmed yesterday that a state aircraft was used. But, that Bentley did not request it.
Stabler said it’s ALEA’s job to make sure the governor is equipped to carry out his duties. He went on to say his predecessor, Spencer Collier, approved the decision. However, Collier says he didn’t know about the wallet and didn’t approve the use of air resources to retrieve it.

Collier was fired by Governor Bentley last month after claims ALEA misused state funding.

Taxpayers have mixed thoughts on the issue:

Kevin Elkins said, “He’s entitled to protection, he is entitled to the state airplane, chopper. So there’s nothing illegal here, may not look good, but there’s nothing illegal here. I think it’s a witch hunt.”

Danny Tillery said, “What we pay in taxes and we are trying to get the state of Alabama a little bit better, that’s a waste of money there.”

The governor said he couldn’t even remember this incident two years ago and stressed while it didn’t look or sound good, there’s nothing illegal about it.
