Ben Smith gives a speech at his graduation from Hope Inspired Ministries–a place he never thought he would be after 15 years in prison serving a murder sentence.

“My life when I did time was in a shamble,” said Smith.

Smith says while serving time, he began to attend Church of the Highlands services there.

“When I went to jail, it was like a wake up call. Only by God’s grace that I’m out,” said Smith.

In January, one week after he got out of prison, he started Hope Inspired Ministries 11-week job training program.

“Ben is one of our best success stories. Part of it is him working the program and part of it is his personality and his determination to better himself and his relationship with Jesus Christ,” said program director Leanne Jordan.

He says Hope Inspired Ministries provided an opportunity for him, teaching him skills, giving him confidence and acceptance.

Thursday evening he received his diploma.

“It feels real good. But a lot of mixed emotions at the same time,” said Smith.

And he has a message for anyone who finds themselves in his shoes.

“Looking at yourself, what do you want out of life? Do you want projects or living on the street to define you or do you want to come and get an education on how to take care of yourself and your responsibilities?”

Giving credit to God with his family, friends and mentors by his side, he is grateful for a second chance.

“You’ll find out that this program is offering an opportunity of a life time,” said Smith.

Smith starts a new job on Monday and looks forward to receiving his GED.
