Gilchrest t-2nd leads Auburn men’s golf in SEC Championship 1st round
SEA ISLAND, Ga. (auburntigers.com) – Junior Matt Gilchrest fired a 2-under 68 and is tied for second leading No. 6 Auburn men’s golf after the SEC Championship first round at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club on Friday.
Gilchrest is two shots behind Vanderbilt’s Matthias Schwab. The Southlake, Texas, native recorded three birdies at Nos. 8, 11 and 15 en route to his 68 with his only bogey coming on the second hole.
The Tigers are in ninth after an 11-over 291. No. 3 Georgia and Kentucky are tied for the lead at 3-under 277 followed by No. 18 Florida (285), No. 7 Vanderbilt (286), Tennessee (286), Texas A&M (287), No. 23 Arkansas (288), Missouri (289), Auburn (291) and No. 13 South Carolina (292).
No. 14 LSU and No. 17 Alabama are tied for 11th at 294 ahead of Ole Miss (301) and Mississippi State (304).
Sophomore All-American Ben Schlottman and freshman Jacob Solomon are tied for 38th with a 4-over 74. Solomon was in second overall before a quadruple bogey at the par-4 14th.
Ben Hogan Award semifinalist Michael Johnson and senior Jake Mondy are tied for 47th at 75. Johnson double bogeyed the 14th as the Tigers gave back six strokes from their top two golfers on the hole.
Auburn will tee off in Saturday’s second round off No. 1 at 6:30 am CT with Arkansas and Missouri.
