A chilly night as friends, family members and advocates gathered together, each one remembering someone who they have lost, including Lucy Cooks.

“My grandson was Jamie Sinclair Cooks. Today would have been his 23rd birthday. He was killed 2 years ago, shot down by his girlfriend,” said Cooks.

The keynote speaker was Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey. She told the group she wanted them to let their voices be heard in the judicial system.

“Speak out about the lack of funding that helps victims. To speak out against legislation that hurts victims, and speak out against leniency that keeps violent crimes from reoccurring again and again,” said Casey.

Each person also received a candle in memory of their loved one lighting up the dark night with hope.

Even though Cook says it brings some comfort, it still won’t help the pain they all hold.

“It doesn’t make me feel better because everybody here is here for the same reason. All of our hearts are broken… just praying and seeking the Lord for strength each and every day,” said Cook.
