4 homers & No-hitter fuel AUM sweep of Coastal Georgia
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (aumathletics.com) —- The No. 3 Auburn Montgomery softball team hit four home runs as a team, and Senior Taylor Powell hurled a no-hitter in Sunday afternoon’s doubleheader to take the sweep over Coastal Georgia 2-0 in game one, and 6-1 in game two.
NOTES
• The Warhawks improved to 40-5 on the year, and finished the season 16-4 in conference play.
• The Mariners fell to 19-21 (3-15) on the season.
• The Warhawks have won at least 40 games for the past five years with this afternoon’s victories, and move into first in the Southern States Athletic Conference standings.
• Powell threw her first career no-hitter in game one with 12 strikeouts
• Senior Kayla Hale launched her ninth home run of the season to tie the career home run record at AUM with 39.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Hale was the only Warhawk to finish both games with an RBI as she blasted a solo shot in the first game, and added an RBI double in game two. She currently leads the team in RBIs with 38.
• Sophomore Amy Persinger finished 3-for-4 in the second game and added two runs scored.
• Sophomore Rose Schmidt and junior Sydney Dishman each added solo home runs in the doubleheader. Schmidt currently has three, and Dishman is third on the team with seven long balls.
• Senior Jennifer Jenkins picked up a two-run home run in the second game for her second of the year. She also added a hit in the first game.
• Senior Taylor Powell improved to 24-3 on the year after tossing the no-hitter in game one, and gave up one run on two hits in the second game. She finished the day with 18 strikeouts on two hits and one run. She walked only one batter on the day, and allowed only four base runners in 12 innings pitched.
• Olivia Husted led the way for Coastal Georgia as she finished the second game 1-for-3 with a home run and the only run of the day for her team.
GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team scored in the first inning, and AUM had a chance in the top of the second with runners on second and third and no outs. However, the Warhawks were unable to plate a run in the second or third to remain tied 0-0.
• AUM scored its first run of the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from Schmidt to right-center, which gave the Warhawks a 1-0 advantage.
• Powell struck out the side for the second time in the game to secure the 1-0 lead after four innings complete.
Neither team scored a run in the fifth, but Hale led the sixth inning off with a solo shot to center to extend the lead to two, 2-0.
• Powell picked up three more strikeouts in the sixth and seventh to secure her first no-hitter, and give AUM the 2-0 victory in game one.
GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM scored two runs on two hits in the top of the first for an early lead. Henderson reached second on an error, and a Persinger single advanced her to third. A passed ball allowed Henderson to score, and a Powell RBI single plated Persinger to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead.
• AUM added three more runs on three hits in the top of the third. A Hale double plated Persinger, and a Jenkins two-run blast added the final runs of the inning. AUM lead 5-0 after three innings.
• Coastal Georgia added its first hit of the day in the bottom of the third after a walk to put runners on the corners with two outs. Powell struck out the next batter to end the inning.
• Coastal Georgia picked up its only run of the day in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run from Husted to left, which cut the AUM lead to four, 5-1.
• Dishman led the seventh inning with her seventh home run of the season to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Warhawks. Ragland picked up a strikeout and two fly balls in the bottom of the seventh to give AUM the 6-1 victory, and series sweep over Coastal Georgia.

• The Warhawks will return to action on Tuesday, April 19, when they travel to face Faulkner University in a non-conference double header that is set to begin at 4 p.m.
