AUM closes non-conference slate with twin bill sweep of Point
WEST POINT, Ga. (aumathletics.com)—- The No. 8 Auburn Montgomery baseball team capped its non-conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Point University Tuesday at the West Point Baseball Complex. The Warhawks took the opener 8-4, before posting a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
NOTES
• With the sweep, the Warhawks improved to 36-12 on the year.
• The Skyhawks fell to 22-23 overall.
GAME 1 STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Richard Nason improved to 2-1 on the year with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Nason struck out three and scattered four hits in the victory.
• Clark Gray tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.
• Blake Grill finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple, walk, three runs scored and three RBIs.
• Trey Matherson drove in three runs with a pair of hits, including his first triple of the season.
• Dalton Kelley scored twice and tallied a stolen base.
• Brandon Davis finished with a team-best three hits, a run scored and a run batted in.
• Christian Cabral, Omar Smith and Nathan Greene had two hits apiece for the Skyhawks.
GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• Point scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning off AUM starter Seth Arroyo. Cabral picked up a RBI on a groundout, plating Bryce Jay, who led off the frame by reaching on an error.
• The Warhawks plated four runs in the top of the second inning, with Grill delivering a two-run double and Matherson a two-run triple. Davis and Mac Seibert added hits in the frame, as AUM took a 4-1 lead.
• The Skyhawks rallied and tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three times, all of which were unearned. Taylor Harper, Smith and Anthony Padron all drove in runs after a one-out error by Matherson allowed the inning to continue.
• The Warhawks took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning. Kelley led off the inning by reaching on an error, before stealing second. He came in to score on Grill’s two-out triple. Grill scored one hitter later, when Davis ripped a double.
• AUM scored single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to provide the final margin, with Matherson and Seibert collecting RBIs.
GAME 2 STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Josh Dewrell notched his second victory of the season by tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out three. He improved to 2-0 on the year.
• Brady Eldridge and Jed Carter threw 2 1/3 innings of perfect relief to close out the win.
• Kelley drove in two runs with a double. He added a run, a walk and his team-leading 23rd stolen base.
• Matherson and Michael Tedford reached base twice, walking twice each.
• Houston Davenport and Kaleb Harris drove in a run each.
• Jay had two of Point’s four hits.
GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• After being held without a hit for the first four innings by Luis Florentino (1-7), the Warhawks struck for a run in the fifth inning on a one-out single by Davenport. Matherson started the rally with a walk, before moving to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Davenport’s rip to left field.
• In the sixth inning, AUM took advantage of a pair of errors to up its lead to 2-0. Kelley reached on a fielding error by Kyle Kelly and scored on a throwing error by Austin Harris.
• The Warhawks put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh inning. Davenport was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, before giving way to Scotty Smith as a courtesy runner. Tedford followed with a walk, before the fourth error of the game by the Skyhawks forced the bases loaded. Kelley connected on a two-run double, scoring Smith and Tedford. Harris followed with a single to right field, scoring Deric Boone.

• The Warhawks will return to Southern States Athletic Conference play on Friday, April 22, when they open a three-game series at Loyola at 6 p.m., in New Orleans.
