Warhawks’ softball sweeps Faulkner in crosstown finale of season
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) —— The No. 3 Auburn Montgomery softball team swept Faulkner University in the final road doubleheader of the regular season 6-2 in game one, and 1-0 in game two to finish 4-0 against the crosstown rival.
NOTES
• The Warhawks improved to 42-5 on the year.
• The Eagles fell to 19-21 on the season.
• AUM improves to 22-9 all-time against Faulkner.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior Sydney Dishman picked up a double in both games with an RBI and a run scored in the first game.
• Senior Jennifer Jenkins finished the day 3-for-8 with two runs scored, and was the only Warhawk to have multiple hits in the second game.
• Senior Kayla Hale finished the first game 1-for-2 with an RBI. She leads the team with 39 RBIs on the year.
• Junior Sarah Angulo added a hit in each game, and picked up her fourth double of the year in the second game.
• Senior Taylor Powell improved to 25-3 on the year after picking up her 70th career shutout in game two. She gave up just four hits, and struck out ten. Powell also earned her second save of the season in the first game. Offensively, Powell provided the only RBI in game two with a single up the middle.
• Junior Rachel Ragland improved to 16-1 after throwing six innings on four hits and one unearned run in the first game. She added five strikeouts in the outing.
• Makenzie Anthony finished with a hit in each game to lead Faulkner offensively.
GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM scored first in the top of the opening inning with five runs on five hits. A Dishman double down the leftfield line scored Jenkins, and a single up the middle from Hale scored Persinger. Schmidt singled to left and scored Dishman, and a walk from Krueger scored Thomas. Brinkman reach on a fielder’s choice, but picked up the RBI as Schmidt scored.
• Ragland picked up two strikeouts in the bottom of the first to give AUM a 5-0 lead after one.
• Neither team pushed across a run, until AUM extended its lead to six in the top of the fourth on an error that scored Krueger.
• Faulkner picked up its first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error that scored Goodson, which made the score 6-1 in favor of AUM.
• Faulkner added its final run of the day in the top of the seventh on a Byrd double to left-center that plated Slemp. Powell entered the game with two outs and runners on first and second, and picked up her second save of the season on a strikeout to give AUM the 6-1 victory.
GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED
• AUM picked up a hit in the top of the first inning on a lead-off single from Jenkins, but were unable to plate the run.
• After a hitless second inning from both teams, AUM added its final run of the day in the top of the third on a Powell single to center that scored Jenkins. The Warhawks led 1-0 after three innings complete.
• Faulkner picked up its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a single to short, but a fly out, pop out and strikeout from Powell ended the inning.
• Faulkner added two more hits in the bottom of the fifth to put runners on first and second with one out. However, Powell struck out the remaining two hitters to strand two runners and hold the AUM lead 1-0.
• Both teams added a hit in the sixth inning, before a hitless seventh from both sides. The first two batters in the bottom of the seventh struck out, before a line drive was caught by Dishman to hand AUM the 1-0 victory in game two and the series sweep over Faulkner.
UP NEXT
• The Warhawks will return to action on Wednesday, April 20, when they host No. 9 Georgia Gwinnett College in the final double header of the season. The first game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
