Auburn promotes Evans to Associate Head Coach

AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com)– Ty Evans, entering his fifth season on the Auburn women’s basketball staff, has been promoted to associate head coach, announced head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy Wednesday.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity Coach Flo has given me to be part of this staff and this program,” Evans said. “We are continuing to build a foundation and a culture of success, and we are very excited about the future of Auburn women’s basketball.”

Evans has been at Auburn for four seasons, joining the Tigers when Williams-Flournoy was named head coach. He has served as Auburn’s recruiting coordinator the last two years.

“He’s always talked about wanting to be a head coach,” Williams-Flournoy said. “I think to really get the experience that he needs, this is a great promotion for him. He works extremely hard for us. He’s been the recruiting coordinator the last couple of years, and he really does a good job with the players on the court.”

For the 2015-16 season, Evans was responsible for coaching the Tigers’ wing players. Under his leadership, junior guard Brandy Montgomery was Auburn’s leading scorer, averaging 14.0 points per game to rank 10th in the SEC in scoring. The Tigers’ defense was one of the league’s best, forcing opponents into 21.1 turnovers per game. Junior Katie Frerking was the SEC’s leader in steals, averaging 2.5 per game.

This is Evans’ second stint as an associate head coach. He served in that position for one year at Alabama during the 2011-12 season after serving as an assistant coach there from 2007-11.

Prior to his tenure at Alabama, Evans worked on Coach Flo’s staff at Georgetown from 2005-07. He began his coaching career at Saint Louis, coaching three seasons for the Billikens in 2001-02 and again from 2003-05.

Auburn finished the 2015-16 season at 20-13 overall, 8-8 in SEC play, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
