She escaped slavery in 1849, then helped others to freedom through the Underground Railroad, later becoming a member of the Suffrage Movement.

Harriet Tubman will now grace the 20 dollar bill.
Most people we talked to say it’s a good choice.

“She accomplished a great deal. Not only the Underground Railroad, just as an individual woman doing a number of things in a time when women really weren’t encouraged to do a whole bunch. She was remarkable,” said Fowler Weissman.
Deborah Lester says,”yes, I think it’s a good idea for Harriett Tubman to be on the dollar bill because it’s time for women to move up in the world. Plus, the next woman is going to be President anyway, so why not put her on a bill too.”

Estoria Johnson says, “I believe it’s a good choice because she has contributed a lot to not only Alabama history, but to American history.”

Although, others say they would like to see someone else in her place.

“I’d prefer Helen Keller because she is an Alabama native and would represent our state because she was such a unique person and overcame all of the obstacles that she had in her life,” said Clemie Brown.

While Rosa Parks did not make the 20 dollar bill, some people say they are okay with having Tubman instead.

“She’ll get her time. I think Harriet Tubman should go first because she was a freedom fighter first,” said Lester.
