Tuskegee claims top seed in SIAC West Division softball

BIRMINGHAM, AL (goldentigersports.com) —  The Tuskegee University softball team pounded out 13 hits Wednesday afternoon, while allowing only three en route to defeating Miles College 11-2 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game and earning the top seed in the SIAC West Division.

Tuskegee (18-28, 6-5 SIAC) still has three conference games remaining this weekend against Kentucky State, however, the worst they could do in the West Division is tie for the top spot and have the tiebreaker over Miles with the series win.

The Lady Golden Tigers used five extra-base hits, including the eighth homerun of the season by Jamaica Williams who finished 1-for-2 with three runs batted in on the day. Roneshia Rudolph finished 3-for-4 with three runs batted in on a double and triple, while scoring a pair of runs.

Kenyah Smith led a trio of players with a pair of hits in the win, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Sharde Thomas finished 2-for-4 (two runs scored) and Chante Warner 2-for-3 (two runs scored).

Meanwhile, Kaylin Finch (10-10) finished off the series, pitching every inning of the series. She allowed just two runs (no earned runs) off of three hits, while striking out one. After giving up two runs in the first inning, Finch sat down 12 consecutive batters until a single in the fifth inning by the Lady Golden Bears.

Tuskegee jumped on top quickly in the first with three runs, highlighted by a two-run triple by Rudolph. After Miles pulled to within a run after the first, Tuskegee scored one in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and put the game away with four more in the sixth inning for the victory.

The Lady Golden Tigers return to action this weekend against Kentucky State in a series that is a makeup series from earlier in the season. The two teams meet in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon, and the athletic department will honor the 2016 seniors between games as they play their last home series.
