Querecuto, Bauers go yard in Biscuits 8-1 win over Smokies
KODAK, Tenn. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – Juniel Querecuto’s 4-RBI day was enough to propel the Biscuits (8-6) to an 8-1 victory on Thursday afternoon, taking the rubber game and the series against the Tennessee Smokies (6-9) in Kodak.
After Granden Goetzman knocked in Willy Adames on an RBI-single in the top of the second, the 23-year-old Querecuto stepped up to the plate with two men on and launched a three-run homer to right-center field off Jen-Ho Tseng (0-2) to hand the Biscuits a 4-0 lead.
The home run was Querecuto’s first since the second-to-last game of 2015, when the infielder hit an inside-the-parker against the Birmingham Barons, and his first round-tripper to leave the yard in almost a year (5/13/15 for A+ Charlotte). Querecuto would add a sacrifice fly in the sixth to complete his first 4-RBI performance since July 17, 2014 when the Venezuelan was a member of the A- Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Chris Kirsch (2-0) started the game on the mound for the Biscuits, and the left-hander delivered another solid performance going six strong innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and tallying two strikeouts for his second win in three outings. Kirsch is still the only member of the Biscuits rotation with a win so far this season.
Jake Bauers would hit hit third home run of the season, a solo shot in the third, as Montgomery also got RBIs from Johnny Field and Kean Wong. Goetzman finished the game 3-4 falling just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Steve Ascher earned his first save of the season after three near perfect innings where he allowed just one hit and notched four strikeouts, as the Biscuits went two games above .500 for the second time this season.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk tomorrow to open up a five-game series with the Jacksonville Suns (7-7) on Friday, April 22 when it will be Princess Night and an all-new MAX Fireworks Show. Chih-Wei Hu (0-0) will be on the mound against Jake Esch (2-1) at 7:05 PM.
