Loyola upsets #8th ranked AUM 2-1

NEW ORLEANS, La. (aumathletics.com) —- The No. 8 Auburn Montgomery baseball team was upset in its Southern States Athletic Conference series opener at Loyola Friday evening, 2-1.

NOTES
• The loss dropped the Warhawks to 36-13 overall and 16-6 in league play.

• The Wolf Pack improved 21-28 on the year and 6-15 in conference games.

• With the loss, combined with a win by Middle Georgia, the Warhawks are now tied for second with the Knights in the SSAC standings with five conference games remaining. MGSU took 2-of-3 from the Warhawks in its series in March and owns the tie-breaker over AUM.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Trey Matherson reached base twice, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk.

• Cody Rush picked up the lone run batted in for the Warhawks, finishing the game 1-for-4.

• Mac Seibert and Blake Grill each roped doubles. The hit by Seibert extended his hitting streak to seven straight games.

• Kade Suther (7-3) took the tough-luck loss, allowing just two runs in six innings of work. Suther allowed seven hits and struck out six in the outing.

• Brady Eldridge allowed just one walk in two scoreless innings of relief.

• Blake Toscano and Luis Angiuzola each finished 2-for-3 with a RBI for Loyola.

• Daniel Posway tossed eight innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one run to earn the victory. Posway struck out three to improve to 2-8 on the year.

• Kevin Lindsey struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the year.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Wolf Pack struck first, scoring a single run in the bottom of the second inning. Ben Condara led off the inning with a walk, before moving to second on a two-out single by Daniel Pappas. After a walk to Spencer Rosenbohm loaded the bases, Toscano beat out an infield single, allowing Condara to score the first run of the game.

• The Warhawks rallied and tied the score with a run in the top of the third inning on a groundout by Rush. Matherson led off the frame with a walk, before Seibert replaced him on the bases by reaching on a fielder’s choice. Grill followed with a double, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. Rush plated the run by grounding out to the shortstop, allowing Seibert to score.

• Loyola took the lead for good in the fifth inning, when Angiuzola singled in Rosenbohm, who started the rally with a single. Toscano bunted Rosenbohm to second, before Angiuzola ripped a two-out single to centerfield to drive in the eventual game winner.

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• The Warhawks turned two double plays in the contest, while the Wolf Pack turned one.

• Loyola stranded eight runners on base. AUM left six runners on.

• The Warhawks committed the lone miscue of the contest.

 

UP NEXT

• The Warhawks and Wolf Pack will conclude their series Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
