Powell earns 5th SSAC POTW honor this season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) — Auburn Montgomery senior hurler Taylor Powell earned her second straight Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor Monday, the league office announced.

The Alabaster, Ala., native received the award for the fifth time this season. AUM pitchers have now captured the weekly honor in 12 of the last 22 weeks. Former standout Cassie Jones was a seven-time recipient last season.

Last week, Powell helped the Warhawks to an undefeated week, posting a 2-0 record with a save. She allowed just 10 hits in 14 1/3 innings pitched, striking out 18 and walking just two. Powell posted a 0.98 earned run average for the week.

Powell opened the week by notching her second save of the season by striking out the only hitter she faced against local foe Faulkner. She followed by tossing her 11th shutout of the season, striking out 10 and scattering just four hits, against the Eagles. Powell capped the week with a complete-game, six-hitter against No. 9 Georgia Gwinnett.

Enter this week’s conference tournament, Powell sports a nation-high 26 wins, while ranking second in earned run average at 0.75. She is third in the NAIA in opponent batting average (.132) and hits per nine innings (3.15). She has struck out 234 hitters in 178 innings.

The Warhawks will return to action Thursday, April 28, in the SSAC Tournament at Fain Park. AUM will play at 6 p.m., but its opponent has yet to be determined.
