Chief Justice Roy Moore is speaking out about complaints filed against him by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The SPLC is asking the judicial inquiry commission to remove Roy Moore from his position.
Moore held a press conference late this afternoon standing alongside legal counsel- Mat Staver, who’s actually the same attorney who represented Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis after she refused to issue same sex marriage licenses.
The SPLC filed complaints over Moore’s orders to probate judges that the state’s sanctity of marriage amendment was still in effect.
Moore claims he never instructed probate judges to not issue same-sex marriage licenses and that the state supreme court sided with Moore that the sanctity of marriage amendment is still in effect.
Roy Moore, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice said, “Neither of which ever told anyone to disobey a federal court order. I’ve seen that so much in the press, media and I am tired of hearing it from SPLC and others. There’s nothing in writing that you will find that I told anybody to disobey a federal court order. I upheld the status of the Alabama Supreme Court’s injunctions.”
Lynn Hopkins, Unitarian Minister said, “To accuse healthy and well adjusted adults of being mentally ill because they do not fit his preconceive notion of proper citizen is it is atrocious it’s offensive. My hope is that the judicial council will take this the words he spoke today clearly false words into account as well as the complaints that were brought by citizens of Alabama.” She’s referring to Moore’s comments at the press conference where he did mention that transgender used to be classified as a mental disorder.
When asked whether or not he would tell probate judges to issue same sex marriage licenses. There was no clear answer. He said there’s a conflict between the state supreme court and the federal level. And that until the U-S supreme court specifically addresses Alabama that confusion will remain.
