Leaders of Gangster Disciples Gang Indicted
Federal indictments in Georgia and Tennessee charge members of the Gangster Disciples gang with racketeering activity.
The indictments unsealed Wednesday name 48 people, 32 charged in Atlanta and 16 charged in Memphis, Tennessee. All but three of those indicted have been arrested.
The indictments say the alleged gang members engaged in criminal activity, including murder, drug trafficking and financial fraud in states around the country.
Among those charged is a former Atlanta-area police officer. The indictment says the officer, who worked for the DeKalb County Police Department until October, said he was a hit man for the gang.
The indictment says the alleged gang members named in the indictment were involved in criminal activity in states including Georgia, Florida, Texas, Indiana, South Carolina, California and Alabama.
The indictments say the Gangster Disciples is a highly structured and hierarchical violent gang that began in Chicago in the 1970s.
