The 1841 Mt. Vernon Cotton Mill in Tallassee was destroyed by an overnight fire.  More than a hundred firefighters brought the fire under control early this morning, but they were not able to save the structure, which was said to be the only confederate mill to survive the Civil War.

Now a fire of undetermined origin has done what the Civil War could not.

Most of the mill jobs were gone from the city by 2005, including those in the Mt. Vernon Mill.

No injuries are reported, and no cause determined so far.

Tallassee has been scarred by fire before. In 2009 a fire destroyed the popular Hotel Talasi. That fire was set to cover a burglary in a consignment shop behind the hotel. Investors bought the building but were never able to restore it.
