AUM preps for SSAC Baseball Tournament Championship
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) — The No. 7 Auburn Montgomery baseball team advanced to the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament championship game with a 4-1 victory over Martin Methodist Friday evening at Paterson Field.
NOTES
• With the win, the Warhawks improved to 42-14 on the year.
• The Martin Methodist season ended at 23-25.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Cole Goodwin (6-3) allowed just three hits in 6 1/3 innings of work to earn the win. He struck out one and walked one, while throwing just 65 pitches.
• Jed Carter notched his nation-high 16th save of the season, working around a lead-off single and striking out a pair.
• Trey Matherson finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs batted in and a run scored.
• Mac Seibert had a pair of hits, including a double, to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He also scored a run.
• Brandon Pooler had two hits for the Warhawks.
• Brandon Bush led Martin Methodist with two hits.
• David Collins (4-3) took the loss, allowing five hits and just two runs, in five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Warhawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, when Matherson scored on an errant pick-off attempt by Collins. Matherson started the scoring opportunity with a one-out double.
• AUM extended its lead to 4-0 with three runs in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a pair of hits and two errors. John-Mark Cosby led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Jacob Kirkwood, before Dalton Kelley scored Cosby when he reached on a fielding error by first baseman Pat Lecroy. Following a single by Seibert, Matherson ripped a double to left-centerfield, scoring both Kelley and Seibert.
• The RedHawks avoided the shutout on a single up the middle by Austin Schubert in the eighth inning.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM hit into the lone double play of the contest.
• The RedHawks committed four miscues, while the Warhawks played error-free baseball.
• AUM stranded 11 runners on base. Martin Methodist left seven runners on.
UP NEXT
• AUM will look to win its second straight SSAC Tournament title Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Warhawks will take on either top-seeded Faulkner of No. 4 seed William Carey.
