Two Prisoners, One Pardon
White House pardons a drug dealer, not a Governor.
President Obama has commuted the sentence of a Montgomery man convicted of drug crimes, but has taken no action to pardon former Governor Don Siegelman, who is in the same prison at the freed convict.
The pardons are part of a White House effort to release federal prisoners who received severe sentences for non-violent drug offenses.
Jerome Lee Menefee was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release in 2005 for cocaine conviction. He was scheduled to go free in August of 2022 from the Oakdale Federal Correctional Institution in Louisiana.
Former Governor Don Siegelman is serving his time at the same prison. Supporters of the former governor have mounted a rigorous but unsuccessful campaign to convince the president to pardon him. Seigelman is due to be released next year.
