Kasey Cooper sweeps SEC Player & Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards

AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com)– Auburn’s Kasey Cooper earned SEC Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors the league announced Tuesday morning. Cooper is the first player to sweep Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year since the latter award debuted in 2004.

Cooper is also the first player from Auburn to earn SEC Player of the Year honors. This is the second year in a row the junior from Dothan, Ala. has earned First Team honors and third year overall she has been named to an All-Conference team. Cooper is tied for the SEC lead in home runs (19) while ranking No. 1 in the conference in slugging percentage (.939), total bases (138), walks (53). Cooper also maintains a 4.0 GPA as a mechanical engineering major and was also selected to the SEC All-Defensive team.

Jade Rhodes was named to the SEC Second Team (IF) for the second season in a row and also earned All-Defensive recognition. Rhodes totaled 16 home runs to rank third in the league and also contributed 62 RBI to rank fourth.

Emily Carosone earned SEC All-Defensive honors for the second straight year. Carosone and Cooper were the only two Tigers to start in all 55 games at their position this season with the senior Carosone compiling a .981 fielding percentage.

The awards were voted on by the league’s coaches.

Auburn heads to the 2016 SEC Championships hosted in Starkville, Miss. The No. 4 seeded Tigers will have a bye the first day and face the winner of No. 5 Alabama and No. 12 Mississippi State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Nusz Park.
