Diamond Hornets repeat as HBCU National Champs
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com) – The 2016 SWAC Champion Alabama State baseball team has been named HBCU National Champions for the second straight year.
The Hornets, who won the first SWAC championship in program history this past Sunday, were again named HBCU National Champions by the blackcollegenines.com website in the large school division. Alabama State was the top ranked team in the Division I poll over the final five weeks of the season, and have been one of the nation’s hottest teams in the second half of the season.
The Hornets (38-15), who set a school record for wins, went undefeated in conference play at 24-0, the first baseball team to do so in league history. Alabama State won all four of its SWAC Tournament contests, including a 7-5 win in the championship game over defending champion Texas Southern. The Hornets scored 59 runs with 55 hits in the tournament, nine of them home runs.
Since April 1, Alabama State has won 22 of 25 games, and is 15-1 since April 22.
