Large Wildfire at Autauga-Chilton Co. Line
Several wildland firefighters with the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) are currently battling a large wildfire along I-65 near the Autauga-Chilton county line, between mile markers 197 and 198.
The wildfire is creating a considerable amount of smoke on the road and motorists are advised to use caution in the area.
At this hour, the exact size of the fire is unknown, but it has been confirmed that homes in the immediate vicinity are no longer in danger. AFC personnel from Autauga and Chilton counties are employing bulldozers to combat the flames, with assistance from volunteer fire departments.
The aviation division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency also dispatched a helicopter and bucket unit to assist with water drops in areas that could not be accessed by doziers.
As a precautionary measure, the AFC is also requesting that all UAS (drones) avoid the air space surrounding the fire.
Firefighting aircraft will be required to suspend the air assault if drones are detected in the area.
