Alabama News Network Receives Awards from the Associated Press

Alabama News Network has received more recognition for excellence in local news coverage. The Alabama Associated Press Media Editors (APME) presented its yearly awards at a luncheon Saturday in Birmingham. Alabama News Network received honors in the following categories for work produced in 2015:

AWARD: Best Coverage of a Planned Event – “Bloody Sunday: 50th Anniversary”
Live and recorded coverage of the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery march, including Pres. Obama’s visit to Selma.

AWARD: Best News Feature – Elise Roberts – “Social Media Protesting”
A look at how social media can be used to organize protest marches and rallies, unlike in the 1960s when this technology hadn’t been developed.

HONORABLE MENTION: Best News Feature – Darryl Forges – “Dr. Martin Luther King’s Organist”
A profile of the organist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. hired at Dexter Avenue Memorial Baptist Church when he was pastor.

HONORABLE MENTION: Best Documentary – “Alabama’s Journey”
A compilation of our special reports on the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. This documentary previously won an ABBY Award from the Alabama Broadcasters Association.

HONORABLE MENTION: Best Sports Feature – “Towering Above Tragedy: The Donta’ Hall Story”
A profile of former Luverne basketball standout Donta’ Hall, whose father died shortly after watching his son play. This story previously won an EMMA Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Southeast Chapter.

HONORABLE MENTION: Best Investigative Reporting – Tim Lennox – “Time Served”
An investigation into why a man is on Montgomery County’s sex offender registry even though he’s never been charged with or convicted of a sex crime.
