City Leaders & Skating Community Discuss New Skate Park
After the City of Montgomery announced that a Staybridge Suites hotel would be coming to downtown, skaters at the Montgomery Skate Park found out their skate park would be closing and moving to a new location.
City leaders met with members of the skating community Monday to brainstorm ideas for a new skatepark design and location.
Justice Griffin has been skating at the skatepark for over ten years and went to the meeting to voice his opinion.
“They decided, hey were trying to work with you guys, we don’t want to just leave you guys high and dry,” he said. “We gave you a park and you guys skated in it, were trying to go for something better and we want to work with you guys to get this to be a possible thing that happens.”
Adena Kramer with the City of Montgomery’s Department of Development says right now she is working to get community input on possible designs.
“It’s all conceptual at this point. We’re looking right now for feedback from the skating community on what works with them for this design and what doesn’t,” she said. “We hope they don’t get so stuck on the design because it is flexible, we are going to be bringing in some professionals to actually create the real design.”
City officials say they are looking at multiple locations for a new skate park, one being next to the train shed.
The last day to skate at the Montgomery Skate Park will be July 4th.
