Two members of Congress at the forefront of the sit-in protest over gun control have strong ties to Selma and the Voting Rights Movement.

Civil right icon John Lewis and Selma native Terri Sewell sat-in with other House Democrats to try and prevent tragedies like the one in Orlando from happening by making it harder for people to buy certain guns.

Ainka Jackson of the Selma Center for Non-Violence, Truth and Reconciliation says its the first time she’s ever seen the techniques for non-violence used by elected officials.

“Its really exciting and empowering to see the tools from the 60’s once again being used and I think it will be used effectively,” said Jackson.

House Democrats are expected to resume their fight for gun control when Congress return from recess July 5th.
