Yonny Chirinos’ no-hitter bid falls short, but Biscuits cruise, 7-1
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits celebrated Independence Day a day early capturing the series against the Mobile BayBears with a 7-1 win over their interstate rivals on Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Yonny Chirinos (2-0) was making his second-ever Double A start and first at Riverwalk, and the right-hander was exceptional taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before it was broken up by an Evan Marzili single in the same inning. The 22-year-old Venezuelan would finish the night going 6.1 innings and allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks en route to his second consecutive win.
The Biscuits offense got things going in the bottom of the second off Mobile starter Billy Buckner (1-3), scoring three runs on one hit, with RBIs from Tommy Coyle and Jake DePew. An inning later, Jake Bauers delivered an RBI-single and Cade Gotta and RBI-groundout to put the Biscuits up 5-0 at the end of three.
In the sixth, Coyle connected on his second home run of the year, this one over the right field wall to make it 6-0, and an RBI-groundout by Casey Gillaspie an inning after would give the Biscuits their seventh and final run, with Mobile’s lone RBI coming from Rudy Flores in the seventh.
The Biscuits are now 7-3 to begin the second half and are all alone in first place after Tennessee’s loss to Jacksonville. Montgomery will now hit the road for ten games, with a five-game series beginning at Mississippi on Monday at 7:00 PM.
