Biscuits flake shutout in 8th, Smokies win 4-2
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits lost their second straight game in the series finale to the Tennessee Smokies on Monday afternoon, falling to their North Division rivals by a score of 4-2.
Yonny Chirinos was on the hill for the Butter and Blue and the right-hander delivered one of the more impressive starts of the season tossing 7.1 innings of three-hit ball, surrendering just two runs to go along with four strikeouts.
The Biscuits had provided a 2-0 lead for the Venezuelan thanks to a strikeout and a wild pitch by Tennessee starter Paul Blackburn that brought Mike Marjama in from third in the fourth, and an RBI-single by Jake DePew in the seventh. And entering the eighth, Chirinos had allowed just one hit, a single to Ben Carhart in the second at-bat of the game.
But the Smokies stormed back, and after putting on a couple of baserunners in the eighth, Trey Martin came through yet again with a game-tying two-run off Biscuits reliever Adam Kolarek. Martin finished the series with six RBI in his last two games.
In the ninth, the Smokies would tally two more runs to take the lead on an RBI-single by Victor Caratini and a bizarre groundout play by Gioskar Amaya that saw Kolarek spike the ball into the ground enabling Caratini to score from second. James Farris would enter the game in the bottom of the ninth to close things out for Tennessee, who went on to win by two.
The Biscuits are off on Tuesday but will open up a five-game series with the Birmingham Barons away at Regions Field beginning on Wednesday.
