The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Central Alabama CrimeStoppers  have announced a new program to keep illegal guns out of schools.

This school year, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will offer a $500 reward through CrimeStoppers for any tip that leads to the confiscation of a gun on school grounds.  This will include after-school sanctioned events.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Central Alabama CrimeStoppers are offering this service to every school system in Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Pike and Tallapoosa counties.

In the past, CrimeStoppers has offered offers a $50 gift card to any student that turns in someone involved in activity that they think could be a danger to classmates or staff of their school. This tip line lets students remain anonymous as they report people with guns, knives, drugs or theft.

Within the past five years, CrimeStoppers says its tip line has resulted in 87 criminal arrests and the clearance of 122 criminal cases on school grounds in the River Region.
