Biscuits shoot down Barons 13-2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits showed very little rust after their off-day on Tuesday, thrashing the Birmingham Barons, 13-2, in game one of a five-game set on Wednesday night at Regions Field.
Taylor Guerrieri (10-4) was on the hill for the Biscuits, and the right-hander was outstanding once again taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning before it was spoiled by an Eddy Alvarez single. Joey DeMichele would homer in the next at-bat, but those two knocks were the only ones that Guerrieri would allow in seven innings of work on his way to his Southern League-leading tenth victory of the season.
The 23-year-old hurler got plenty of help from his offense as well, as theBiscuits swatted three home runs and eight extra-base hits on their way to an 11-run thumping of their North Division rivals. Cade Gotta led the way for Montgomery with three hits including two doubles and a solo home run in the sixth, his third of the season.
Willy Adames also had a big night, knocking in a game-high three with a double and a triple. Justin Williams, who was playing in just his second-ever game with the team, hit the longest home run of the game, a towering shot deep over the right field wall as part of a five-run fifth that gave the outfielder his first long-ball at the Double-A level.
Kean Wong added his fourth home run of the season in the fourth, as theBiscuits coasted in this one. It wasn’t all a bed of roses for Montgomery though, as they lost Mike Marjama to a knee injury in the second inning, as the catcher tripped awkwardly over first base on an infield single.
The Biscuits will try to make it two straight in game two on Thursday with Chih-Wei Hu (3-6) taking on Blair Walters (3-3) at 7:05 PM.
