Barons’ walk-off stuns Biscuits, 3-2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com)- After dominating the Birmingham Barons through the first eight innings, the Biscuits lost game two in heartbreaking fashion, 3-2, on Thursday night at Regions Field.
Chih-Wei Hu was on the mound for Montgomery, and the right-hander delivered another dominant outing pitching seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits to go along with six strikeouts. But as has been a trend for much of the season, the Biscuits struggled to drive in any runs for Hu through most of his start, as Birmingham starter Blair Walters kept them off balance through the first six innings.
The game remained scoreless until the seventh when Jake Bauers led off with a double off of Walters. Granden Goetzman would then come through with an RBI-single up the middle to plate the game’s first run as the Biscuits took a 1-0 lead. Kean Wong’s sacrifice fly later in the inning would double that advantage, which is what the Biscuits took into the ninth after a scoreless eighth pitched by Kyle Winkler.
Montgomery then turned to their new closer Jaye Chapman, who entering the game hadn’t allowed a single run and only three hits in 15 innings out of the bullpen. The right-hander was also a perfect 10-for-10 in save opportunities, but met his match on this night when he walked Eddy Alvarez to lead off the inning followed by an RBI-triple by Joey DeMichele.
Courtney Hawkins was up next, and the left fielder knocked in DeMichele with a game-tying single. A few batters later, Keon Barnum stepped up with runners at the corners and took a two-strike pitch from Chapman into left field for a walk-off single.
The Biscuits will try to rebound on Friday night with Brent Honeywell (0-0) taking on White Sox number three prospect Spencer Adams in his Double-A debut at 7:05 PM.
