Rays’ fmr Trojan Chase Whitley rehabs with Biscuits Saturday
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (biscuitsbaseball.com) –Tampa Bay Rays pitcher, Chase Whitley, is set to rehab in Montgomery Saturday night when the Biscuits take on the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at 6:35 p.m.
Whitley, a native of Ranburne, Ala. and former member of Troy University’s baseball team, is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery performed in May 2015. Whitley has made two rehab starts prior to joining the Biscuits, both with A+ Charlotte, allowing only two hits over three scoreless innings while striking out four.
Whitley grew up on a poultry farm in Ranburne, Ala., and resides there in the offseason with his high school sweet heart, Brooklyn, and son, Clete Coleman. Whitley attended Ranburne High School where he played baseball and basketball.
His appearance at Riverwalk Stadium on Saturday will mark the second time he has played in the venue, the first coming when Ranburne High School won the Alabama State Baseball Championship in 2006.
Whitley played baseball for two seasons at Southern Union State (Ala.) Community College before transferring to Troy University in 2010. While playing for the Trojans, Whitley was a two-way player who hit .412 with 59 RBI and was named first team All-Conference as a sophomore.
Selected by the New York Yankees in the 15th round of the 2010 June Draft, Whitley made his major league debut as a relief pitcher in 2014, appearing in 24 games for the Yankees over two stints.
This is the second Major League rehab assignment for the Biscuits this season, the first coming on May 25 when Rays closer, Brad Boxberger, joined the team.
The Biscuits continue their ten-game home stand tonight with game 4 of the series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the AA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, at 7:05 p.m. for Salute to Alabama Agriculture Night. The series against the Blue Wahoos concludes tomorrow with Hank Williams Night as the Biscuits celebrate the King of Country Music and Montgomery legend; capping the night off with a MAX Fireworks Show!Sunday the Biscuits open a five-game series against the Jackson Generals, AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
