Alexander City Workers Continue Strike

Some city workers in Alexander City have been on strike since Tuesday.  The mayor of Alexander City says the strike is because the city’s finance director was reinstated Monday night at the city council meeting.   Mayor Charles Shaw fired the finance director July 22nd, after he says he had many issues with her.

“It’s just continuously things that go on,” he said, “I could sit here and tell you dozens of things that have happened throughout the twenty months she’s been here.”

Sandra Machen’s attorney says he thinks the mayor told the employees to go on strike.

“He terminated her for dishonesty, for falsification and for conduct unbecoming of an employee and in a full blown hearing on the record he didn’t substantiate any of those charges,” he explained.

The mayor says he is hopeful employees return to work on Thursday.
