W.O. Parmer Elementary Construction Bid Accepted
Two Butler County schools are getting some much needed new additions.
The refinancing of a 2007 bond issue left the Butler County School Board with a little more than $3 million. The refinance mandated this money be spent on capitol improvement within a three year period. Butler County BOE decided the best way to use the money would be give attention to the campuses that needed it the most: W.O. Parmer and Mckenzie High.
Both schools are still using buildings that were part of the original schools built decades ago. The campuses will each have seven new classrooms added on, and W.O. Pamer will also get a new library.
In a recent meeting, the board decided to accept Greenville Southland Builders’ construction bid for the W.O. Parmer project. The bid was $1.8 million, which is slightly under budget. The plan is to begin construction as soon as contracts are signed and have the new classrooms and library ready to open by August 2017. This does mean there will be construction going on while school is in session, but Superintendent Amy Bryan says her teachers have been planning out how to keep the kids safe all summer.
“I believe anytime that construction is happening on a school’s campus, the contractor is SUPER aware of the curious little ones, and have that fencing and everything else,” she says. “But of course, our own staff have to supervise our own students and make sure they’re not getting into any area that they shouldn’t be in.”
The school board is having a called meeting on Thursday, August 4, to vote on the bid for the Mckenzie High project. The meeting starts at 6 PM and the public is welcome to attend.
There will also be more information about parking and traffic issues or questions parents might have at the elementary school open houses. W.O. Parmer’s open house is at 5 PM on Monday, August 8. Greenville Elementary is at 5 PM the following Tuesday.
