Biscuits fizzle Smokies 7-5
KODAK, Tenn. (biscuitsbaseball.com) – The Biscuits beat the Tennessee Smokies for the second-straight night thanks to eleven singles and a solo home run by Granden Goetzman, defeating their North Division rivals 7-5 at Smokies Stadium on Saturday evening.
Chih-Wei Hu (4-8), who entered Saturday night’s clash having allowed a single run in 16 innings against the Smokies this season, made his 20th start of the season a memorable one going eight innings for the first time all season and surrendering just four runs on five hits to notch his fourth win of the season.
After trading a run with the Smokies through the first two innings, the Biscuits took the lead for good in the third thanks to an RBI-single by Patrick Leonard to make it 2-1. Braxton Lee would add an RBI of his own on a fielder’s choice an inning later, before Goetzman stepped up and drilled a Jen-Ho Tseng (5-5) pitch over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season in the fifth.
The Biscuits weren’t done though, as Leonard added another RBI-single later in the inning and Justin Williams followed suit with an RBI-single in the subsequent at-bat. Tennessee would try to launch a comeback scoring two runs in the eighth, and another in the bottom of the ninth, but Jaye Chapman got Trey Martin to swing and miss at strike three to end the game with a runner on first and hand the Biscuits their 57
th victory of the season.
They will aim for number 58 on Sunday when Brent Honeywell (1-1) takes on Michael Wagner (2-0) at 4:05 PM.
