Active Duty Guardsman Could Lose Apartment

Imagine coming home after fighting for your country, and finding out you may have to relocate your family. One National Guardsman is battling his apartment complex to keep a roof over his family’s head.

Master Sergeant John Carlson was overseas he found out his wife received an eviction notice on their Apartment door back in March at the east dale apartments. Carlson received a cease and desist letter from the Judge Advocate General’s office.
Carlson says he’s covered under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. The act protects solders on active duty from mortgage relief, termination of leases, and protection from evictions. The apartment complex waived the eviction, but Carlson says the complex is still giving him issues when he returned home.

“There’s just so much emotions going on right now and I’m doing the best I can to try to get everything back to where it was,” says Carlson.

Alabama News Network received a statement from the apartment complex’s corporate office saying in part:
“Eastdale Apartments commends Mr. Carlson for his service to our country and has extended Mr. Carlson numerous courtesies upon learning of his service overseas. We are investigating the matter internally and will continue honoring Mr. Carlson’s role at the complex.”

President George W. Bush Signed the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act back in 2003. For more information on the act visit https://www.justice.gov/crt-military/scra
