Hornet netters ink 7 for 2016

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (bamastatesports.com)  – Alabama State University Head Tennis Coach Anuk Christiansz has announced the tennis signings for the 2016-17 season.  He will bring in three players on the men’s team and four on the women’s team.

Ion Efrom will transfer to ASU from Texas-Arlington.  Efrom originally hails from Romania and will bring a championship background with him as UTA won the Sun Belt Conference Championship last season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Another transfer will make the short trip to Montgomery from nearby Troy University. Tomas Fernandez, a native from Argentina, will be a sophomore for the Hornets and had a solid freshman campaign in Troy finishing the season with a 4-3 singles record and 3-1 in doubles action.

The Hornets have also signed freshman Andrej Trajkovski.  He lives in Belgrade, Serbia.

“These are three solid players for our men’s program,” Christiansz said.  “We are continuing to build a championship program at ASU and these three young men will make an immediate impact on our team.  I am looking forward to them getting on campus and becoming a part of the Hornet Nation and helping us reach our goal of another SWAC Title.”

On the women’s side, ASU will bring in another player with a conference championship pedigree.  Reka Szentes will transfer to ASU from Nevada-Las Vegas where she was a member of the Mountain West Champions.

Szentes hails from Budapest, Hungary and played a lot of tennis out west last season.  She finished the year with a 9-10 singles record and went .500 in doubles play with a 4-4 record.  She will have three years of competition left at ASU.

The other three signees are all true freshmen.  Jorana Parlic comes to Montgomery from Belgrade, Serbia.  Marja Blaxevic and Mirna Curcic are from Zagreb, Croatia.

“We are coming off what may have been one of the best seasons in the history of the women’s program and we think we have a chance to be better next year with this group of signees,” Christiansz said.  “All four of these young ladies are experienced players and will add to a strong group of returners from last season’s team.”
