Six Warhawks named to ITA’s All-Academic Team
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (aumathletics.com) — The Auburn Montgomery men’s and women’s tennis team were each announced as 2016 All-Academic Teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association recently.
The men’s program was one of 15 teams selected, while the women’s team was among the 21 institutions honored. Additionally, Vincent Dubosclard, Birkir Gunnarsson, Francisco Mendieta and Santiago Veglia from the men’s squad, as well as Celine Lenertz and Kelly Southwood from the women’s team were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
The ITA All-Academic team award is presented to institutions with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.2 or better. All varsity letterwinners are factored into the team GPA. The men have now received the award for five consecutive seasons, while the women repeated as an All-Academic team recipient.
To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade point average of at least 3.5for the current academic year and have been enrolled at the school for at least 2 semesters.
Originally from Paris, France, Dubosclard posted an 18-4 singles record for the Warhawks last season, while also recording a 14-6 mark in doubles play. A two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete majoring in business, Dubosclard was also a CoSIDA Academic Second-Team All-American and NAIA Scholar-Athlete this past season.
Majoring in psychology, Mendieta finished the 2016 season with an 11-9 singles record and a team-best 21-2 doubles mark. A native of Bucaramanga, Colombia, Mendieta is majoring in psychology.
A native of Kopavogur, Iceland, Gunnarsson is a double major in business administration and sports management. On the court, he led the Warhawks with 20 victories in singles play, while adding a 21-2 doubles mark.
Veglia, who is undecided on a major, tallied an 11-5 singles record, while pairing with three different teammates for a doubles mark of 15-9.
Southwood, a native of Wellington, New Zealand, finished the 2016 season with a team-best 19 singles victories and a 22-1 doubles record. Southwood is majoring in marketing and was also a Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Lenertz, originally from Syndey, Australia, won 17-of-18 singles matches and matched Southwood’s team-leading 22 doubles victories.
