Supreme Court Refuses Bond Review for Mtgy Officer Charged with Murder

Aaron SmithThe Alabama Supreme Court is refusing to hear the case of a Montgomery police officer charged with murder.

The court without comment on Thursday denied a request by officer Aaron Smith to review a judge’s decision setting bond for the officer’s release.

Smith is free on $150,000 bond, but defense lawyer Mickey McDermott claims the amount is twice what it should be. He says bond for an ordinary citizen would be far less, and it’s wrong to have an officer’s bond set so high.

The justices refused to consider his claims.

Smith was charged with murder in March following the fatal shooting of Montgomery resident Gregory Gunn. Gunn was killed outside a home in his neighborhood.

A grand jury still hasn’t reviewed the case, but McDermott says the delay isn’t unusual.
